Frenchmen Guy Bertin and Jean Paul Lecointe, both on 350 KR Kawasakis, dominated the opening round of the six meeting 2012 ICGP series at Catalunya, Spain on Sunday.

Bertin, who qualified on pole with a lap 1.7 seconds quicker than anyone else, won the first 12-lap race, beating luggish-starting Lecointe home by just over a second.

Bertin was out of luck, though, in race two, later in the afternoon. After leading the 12-lap race for the first two, Bertin was passed by Lecointe.

From then on, though, Bertin shadowed his rival, never more half a second down.

Two laps from home Bertin encountered gearbox problems and after making a pit stop he then pulled out, leaving Lecointe to take a comfortable victory, over 14 seconds clear of Britain’s Ian Simpson.

It was a tough meeting, too, for Simpson. The Scottish rider was second fastest in qualifying on the 350 BSR TZ Yamaha, but after running with the two Frenchmen and leading for three of the first five laps of race one began to struggle with gearbox problems and slipped back.

Another Brit, Chris Bishop (350 Precision), was also running well. Lying third in the race after setting third best time in qualifying, Bishop crashed out at the penultimate corner on lap eight and smashed into the trackside barrier and going to hospital with suspected leg and pelvis injuries.

There were damp patches on the track throughout the day, but it was oil that caught out another British rider, Richard Parker (350 Spondon Yamaha) when lying fourth on the final lap. He was unhurt.

His departure allowed two other British riders, Anthony Hart (350 TZ Yamaha) and Simon Denshaw (350 TZ Yamaha), to climb to fourth and fifth places.

Parker had better luck in race two, when both Bertin and Hart pulled out in the closing stages.

Hart was holding third place when his engine seized, gifting the final place on the podium to Parker.

Frenchman Yves Hecq (250 Armstrong) and Dutchman Johan Napel (350 TZ Yamaha) were fourth and fifth over the line, separated by only a fifth of a second.
